Not having seen Paterson yet, what strikes me as odd is that nobody has mentioned Hartley's Henry Fool (about a garbage man poet), a film I thought of immediately when first hearing about Paterson. Maybe these films are nothing alike, maybe Hartley is pretty much forgotten at this point, still I wonder...

The dispositions of the eponymous characters, and the agendas of each writer/director, are so different.

Jeez, I remember the theatrical release of Henry Fool.  At that point, we'd all seen Hartley's work on video, and it seemed like his time had finally arrived to catch the '90s indie wave.

Paterson
* * * - Good

While still longer than it needs to be, Paterson is one of Jim Jarmusch's very best films because it's so utterly charming. A finger in the eye of the phrase "all men lead lives of quiet desperation" without riding high on endlessly sunny optimism. Actually, I could say this still proves the quiet side of the desperation, but that's just the cynic in me coming out. I loved the liberal use of twins, which is never explained but feels like the part of the fun where I get to play along.

I will think long about Paterson's relationship with Laura, the too perfect girlfriend who clearly also frustrates Paterson with some of her choices. The same personality that drives her passion for cooking and spontaneous date to an old horror film also needs to spend a great deal of money on a guitar. It's about the friends at the bar, including the overly-dramatic chucklehead that everyone puts up with. Marie should play straight with him until it sinks in, but then there wouldn't be the good times.

I hope Jarmusch continues moving his storytelling in this direction.

Yeah, that movie is really good. For such a low-key movie a lot has stuck in my brain. What did you think of the ending with the Japanese guy?

It could be seen as magical realism. The film is imposing itself onto the character, telling him to "pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again," but I found it worked within the framework of charm Jarmusch built into this world. As much as this looks like a blue-collar slice of life, it's actually anything but. The ending was a continuation of the fairy tale.
