Glazer, Jonathan
« on: June 24, 2008, 03:05:38 AM »
I don't feel I can justify including Jonathan Glazer, but I don't want to leave him off either.  Many people really dug Sexy Beast, but I stand nearly alone in thinking Birth is an incredible achievement in filmmaking.  I've also watched his DVD and he's completely unafraid to push the music into the background of the video, focusing more on a narrative story.  Plus, his commercial showing surf waves as giant horses made my jaw hit the floor.  It's visually stunning (and both pre-dates and does the job better than Fellowship of The Ring.)

I say Jonathan Glazer definitely belongs in this discussion.  He is a Great Director who has already proven himself, and I will be there opening weekend for whatever he does next.

So, should I give him a proper poll like Todd Field and Darren Aronofsky?

I'd argue for inclusion of what I sometimes call my favorite video ever.

Love it.

I think I'd love how awkward it'd be, or how awkward it should be.

You're not alone. I'm not familiar with his music videos, nor have I seen Sexy Beast, but Birth is indeed great. You dont' see things like this very often:

You telling me I need to rewatch Birth? I think I was really tired while watching this and don't remember a whole lot of it.

I really like his videos, especially the Radiohead ones.  I saw Sexy Beast in the theater based solely on my enjoyment of his videos and thought it was just an awful movie.  I probably should revisit it since I was a far different person back then.  Haven't seen Birth, probably because of my reaction to Sexy Beast.

Voted all 6.  As far as I'm concerned all those involved in the Director's Label series are great filmmakers and masters of their craft - even if that craft is not standard narrative film (i.e. chris cunningham).  I appreciated the tone and the look of Birth but I did not like Kidman in it.

I think he's a great video director.  I like his commercials.  He's made one amazing film with Sexy BeastBirth had a very good look but the story wasn't very good and I can't stand Cameron Bright.

My exposure to Glazer is limited, I've only seen Sexy Beast and the Virtual Insanity video, but I have to say I'm underwhelmed by what I've seen so far. Sexy Beast I may dislike unfairly, as Ben Kingsley's performance had been hyped to me to much beforehand, and I didn't find his work as inspired as most people said. And Virtual Insanity, while clearly impressive from a technical aspect, didn't really wow me otherwise. It felt like seeing an advanced robot that can't do anything practical.

Updated this poll and reset counts to zero. Please only vote once.

I'll post my list once I figure out how I feel about Under the Skin.
