Almost Famous - it captures that magical point where childhood innocence gives way to adulthood.

Say Anything

I find most teen movies from the 80s are vastly overrated in certain circles (especially John Hughs stuff), but this completely lived up to the hype when I saw it.

Wish you had separated Almost Famous and offered Untitled (The Director's Cut) as an option.

I agree.  Either cut would still be my pick but I'd be curious to know how many people prefer each cut.

how different are they?  i was surprised to see AF run away with this one, it seems such a standard feel good flick.  apparently i should revisit this one too.  i voted for VS
But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.

I remember prefering the theatrical cut to the longer version but I couldn't name a single difference off the top of my head.

I have to go with Say Anything. While I still like Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire (not a big fan of Elizabethtown or Vanilla Sky) I think they delve a little too much into nostalgia and sentimentality, respectively. Say Anything doesn't have any of those pitfalls. Plus, Lloyd Dobler is one of the greatest characters to grace a movie screen, so that puts it more than over the top.

To me, SAY ANYTHING is easily his best film. ALMOST FAMOUS was fine but very overrated, JERRY MAGUIRE has really aged badly (I thought it was OK when it came out, but shameless audience pandering), and VANILLA SKY is just OK (granted, I'm not a big fan of the original OPEN YOUR EYES either). Haven't seen SINGLES or ELIZABETHTOWN. Overall, a good and sometimes great writer but is there anyone who thinks he's a great director? If so, why?

I find Jerry Maguire infinitely rewatchable - the mix of sports and romance makes in high on the list of films my wife and I don't mind watching together.

Say Anything never did anything for me.

Almost Famous is all-time great
