Die Hard

This was tough to choose.  I love both films.

Which cultural touchstone would you use more often, "Yippie-kai-yay-..." or flux capacitor. Yippie, obviously.

Actually...

I regularly quote BttF. I certainly use "great scott!" all the time. I never ever quote Die Hard. It's a great action movie no doubt, but not even a close matchup. Back to the Future is one of the best films ever made easily, while Die Hard is simply one of the best action movies ever made.

And how are Biff and George annoying? George is amazing!

And oh my god what great dialogue.

"'Take your damn hands off her!' Do you really think I outta swear."
"Yes, definitely, Goddammit, George, swear!"

"Take this you mutatin' sonofabitch!"

"Look! There's a rhythmic ceremonial ritual coming up!"

Doc Brown: Then tell me, Future Boy. Who's President of the United States in 1985?
Marty: Ronald Reagan.
Doc Brown: Ronald Reagan? The actor!? Then who's vice-president, Jerry Lewis? I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady? And Jack Benny is Secretary of the Treasury!

Doc Brown: What am I wearing?
Marty McFly: Oh this, this is a radiation suit.
Doc Brown: Radiation suit? Of course! Because of all the fallout from the atomic wars! This is incredible. A portable television studio! No wonder your president has got to be an actor, he has to look good on television.

"Sounds pretty heavy."
"Weight has nothing to do with it."

And of course the classic line:

"Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads!" *cue Huey Lewis and his faithful News*
"We didn't clean the hamster's cage, the hamster's cage cleaned us!"

I use flux capacitor a heck of a lot, really more than I should admit to.

I'm constantly referencing the flux capacitor. In fact, I reference BttF so much that I believe if I ever made a film it, no matter what it was actually about, it would just end up being a giant homage to BttF.

Any piece of technology that I don't know the real name for is a flux capacitor.

"Why isn't my computer working?" my sister asks.
"Well how do you expect to get online with such an old flux capacitor?" I answer.

Back to the Future is on my personal Top 100, but it has dated badly.

Die Hard is the Greatest Action Film of All Time.  For me, it even surpasses Raiders of the Lost Ark.  I have never seen another film that gave me such a thrill ride.  I've watched it so much, it became like a personal film school.  It's where I learned the awesomeness of well-used widescreen, the importance of character in an action fantasy and all the great character touches.

The single most exciting moment in film history for me is after John McClane jumps off the roof attached to the fire hose.  He swings out to shoot the glass, crashes through and in a brilliant focus rack, he lands just as the hose mechanism tumbles to the ground behind him.  McClane is YANKED off his feet, dragged towards the window as the hose tries to pull him back outside the building.

And what about when Alan Rickman - the year's Best Supporting Actor and one of the All-Time Great Villains - switches to an American accent.

And how about the incredible camera angle inside Al Powell's car as the body falls through the windshield.

And McClane killing a guy by shooting out his kneecaps.  The guy stumbles head first into a glass window.

Okay, I'll be honest and say this before someone else does.  Die Hard is not perfect.  Neither is Back to the Future.  No film is.  But for everything Die Hard does wrong (undead Alexander Godunov) it does about 20 things perfectly.
