I'd have to disagree with you about Forrest Gump being better directed than Back to the Future. I can't articulate why exactly I feel this way, but I'm sure I'll come up with it and will get back to you on it.

I think the Random Movie Deathmatch speaks VOLUMES about your feelings for Back to the Future.

Except that I do think Forrest Gump is an exceptionally directed film and you could probably very validly argue that it is a better piece of direction than Back to the Future.

It's kind of like Fincher may win Best Director for Benjamin Buttons, but for many his finest directing will be Se7en or Fight Club although it will be very difficult to make a case as to why.

Back to the Future, Roger Rabbit and Forrest Gump are all neck-and-neck for me here. I went with Who Framed Roger Rabbit, since it's the one I most want to revisit.

I completely agree with Frozenhamster.  They're his best films and his best direction.

I was trying to dig into your reasoning for choosing Roger Rabbit over Back to the Future...

don't try, you'll be digging for miles into the depths of a deranged mind . . .(with all due respect 1strong opinion, but really?)

I was wondering if somebody could explain how BTTF is a better film than Gump, but Gump is better direction. I'm not trying to be a smart alec I just don't understand and some elaboration might help.

BTTF.

Weird that he hasn't made a really good movie since Roger Rabbit, isn't it?

It makes sense to me, actually.  That movie was so technique-intensive, and ever since he's been way more obsessed with gadgetry, generally at the expense of storytelling.  Despite a ton of flaws, I thought he started to find his way back a little with What Lies Beneath (not good, but at least story-centric) and then more with Cast Away (almost good, with techinical challenges serving the story, rather than vice versa), but now he's taking steps backwards with this performance capture animation kick.
