Up until Polar Express that is one hell of a filmography.

You don't know what you're talking about, The Polar Express is great.

You, Murderer (1995)

I was originally just going to write a brief paragraph about this footnote in Zemeckis' career, but the project is so bonkers and screenshots became a must. This episode of Tales From the Crypt is a modern Lady in the Lake, told entirely from the point-of-view of a man who looks and sort of (but not really) sounds like Humphrey Bogart. The effect is always distracting, never convincing, as our lead continuously finds himself next to the most reflective tables, flasks and elevator doors ever. Luckily, he is murdered early on, sparing us trying to get these Bogie freeze frames to talk, but by then the damage is already done.

As an experiment, this is probably still worth a look. Zemeckis is clearly trying out some special effects ideas and John Lithgow, Isabella Rossellini and Sherilyn Fenn make it watchable. I initially hoped it would play more into Noir, but the story is very basic and silly, never deciding if it wants to acknowledge this guy's uncanny resemblance.

A Christmas Carol
* * ½

Easily the most successful of Zemeckis' animation trilogy, with a lot of the technical kinks worked out. At times visually stunning and at times it looks like some of the most high-end video game cut scenes. (It's funny that Ebert went on record saying that Video Games were not an artistic medium, but went crazy over this film which resembles one of VG's most artistic contributions.) I understand what Zemeckis was trying to do with removing live action limitations and letting his camera run wild, but sometimes he's showing off more than serving the story. This is most noticeable with the 3rd spirit, the biggest departure from the source material, when Scrooge is shrunk down and running through the city while being chased by a death coach. There's a lot of Horror in this telling of the tale, and it made me wish Zemeckis would try his hand at that again.

Flight was alright. Watched it last night. I would've bet a million dollars it came out later than 2012 though. Like I thought 2 years ago at most. The final act is pretty compelling... before that it's predictable but watchable.

Don Cheedle really seems to bring out the best in those who act opposite him in a scene. Small part for him, but well done.
