Wow. Neat idea. It's gonna take lots of participation, but I think Filmspotter nation can do it!

Quite true, however as you say, I have faith the community is more than willing to participate in general board activities.

Plus it'll be nice to see at the end of it what we recommend, and obviously it'll be interesting to compare us to imdb and the like.

We did this on a different movie message board I was on, and it worked out great. It took for-ev-er though.

This seems like something pixote would dream up.

I'll gladly participate though.

Not to create more work for you, but there might need to be at least two rounds of voting, depending on how much overlap there is in the initial votes.  I mean, my ten films (that number seems small, incidentally) might not gets votes from anyone else, but in a second round, selecting from a list of 200 or so films, I'd know that my ballot would have more of a chance of making an impact.

That's a point.

Would increasing it to 20 be better for you?  Obviously I don't want to put it up too high as it might discourage people from voting.  As for a 2nd round of voting, I'll see how this goes and decide from there.

The number of films is a tough balance.  Too low might discourage participation as much as too high (as in, "omg, I couldn't possibly pick just ten!").  But, yeah, 20-25 seems like a safe number to me.

As for a 2nd round of voting, I'll see how this goes and decide from there.

Cool.

I think AFI uses some sort of two-round system for their lists. People nominate 10 or 20 films each, a ballot is composed of about 400 of the most-nominated films, then maybe people rank them to determine the order of the final list? I'm not entirely sure, but it seems like a good way to do things.
