It will be a larger ballot, just trying to work out a fair split for top 20 then I'll just expand it for top 100

What about a vote to determine what the 100 movies are, based purely on quantity of votes (no ranking involved).

THEN, once we have the 100, we take a break (whatever is applicable...probably 3 months or so) and people can fill in their blanks among said 100. After that we take another vote, with rankings, and with the only options being the 100 remaining films. Perhaps in this vote you would get 100 points to spread among the movies, with a 15 point maximum per movie, or something like that.

This kind of proposal would need a vote all its own.

I was thinking about this, too ... except, on the second ballot, rather than ranking the films, people could just rate all the ones they've seen on a scale of 1-10.  The order of final list would be determined by highest average vote. ... Except that's a lot of work, and a single ballot can probably yield pretty much the same result if we figure out the right point distribution.

To that end, here's what last year's list would have looked like using the 1st = 30pts, 2nd = 29pts, ..., 20th = 11 points distribution system I mentioned earlier —which I believe is what frozenhamster used for Top 100 Directors.

I've highlighted the films where the rank would have changed by at least twenty spots.

124. Breakfast at Tiffany's — +26, 3 votes, was ranked #150
124. Fargo — +26, 3 votes, was ranked #150

As you can see, even without factoring number of votes into the formula, the resulting list is still more or less in order by number of votes.  And the highest a film with just two votes would have finished was #107, compared to last year when that same film finished in the Top 100 at #80 (along with nine other films that received just two votes).

Only one film with four votes (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) would have missed the cut.  It had 1 16th-place vote, 2 19th-place votes, and 1 20th-place vote.  By comparison, Network, one of the film's tied for the last spot on the list, had just three votes, but one was a 7th-place vote, one was a 10th-place vote, and one was a 15th-place vote.  Comparing those votes, I think it makes sense that Network would make the list and Umbrellas wouldn't, even though Umbrellas received one more total vote.

That looks really good pix. A lot of the same films moved around as when I sorted votes then points... so whatever happened it seems effective :)

My system is clearly superior due to its raising the scores of Blade Runner, Rushmore AND Vertigo.

I'm certain that almost no film on my list will have the same ranking as last time and that as many as 6 may drop off completely.

Ranking was why I didn't turn in a vote last time.
