Basil will watch:

"Thrilling As love Born Amid A Thousand Fabulous Adventures!" Come on! How awesome is that? They just don't make 'em like this anymore!

He will watch it and he will like it.

that is indeed one of the most awesome movie taglines ever.  is there a thread devoted to awesome/terrible taglines? there should be one

"This is your mind on anime" would probably make whatever list I made (for horrible, that is).

Yep, that's what I said when I dictated Paprika. It's the absolute worst tag line I've ever read. I mean as if people don't already have enough reservations about anime you slap a colorful poster with a bunch of visceral images inside of a woman's head and the best thing you can do in an attempt to break any preconceived notions is "This is your mind on anime" seriously?

i figured for sure that lise would have Down By Law under her belt as she has put effort into watching New Orleans films and that she has an expansive viewing history (i get this more from the f2f time i spent with her, not from reading all but about 50 pages of her posting history).  that said, i knew i had to check in with her on that miniscule chance that she had not yet seen DBL - surprise, surprise - she hadn't!  on top of the film having Crescent City locations, i love the fact that i am able to share one of my favorite directors - Jim Jarmusch.  though DBL is probably usually considered one of his minor works (and it has issues), it was my first Jarmusch, and probably also an early (my first?) intro into art/alt film.  this is probably his most mainstream film in that the humor isn't so dry, especially with Roberto Benigni in one of his better performances.

had DBL not worked out, i was going to float a second film i figured she would have seen, A Home at the End of the World, with one of her boy candies - Colin Farrell.  his role in this film is quite unlike most everything else i have seen him in - a quiet, dorky character that is sweet, loving, and vulnerable.  the film also stars Robin Wright Penn, and the that guy Dallas Roberts, with an appearance by Sissy Spacek.  this film barely blipped into theatres in 2004, but i think it is a sweet little gem (especially as it deals fairly well with an alternative relationship model).

i had a bevy of next films in mind and i was hoping not to have to resort to something far out, though i hadn't ruled it out :) .

i'm looking forward to also rewatching this film - lise, i hope you enjoy it!
But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.

Matt the Movie Watcher is assigned

I was tempted to go with one of the many great pre-code films from the early 30's, but decided instead to make him watch nick and nora two of my favorite characters in film. While it was released in 1934 (at the start of production code enforcement) they manage to skirt around the rules a bit, and the result is one of my favorite movies/movie series.

Looking forward to it. I used to work in a vid store that had the whole series. There was a group of English grad students obsessed with them and they'd talk my ear off about them. I've always intended to get to it but now I'll finally pull the trigger. Should be fun!

I mean, yes master.

The Thin Man Movies are very addictive. I only got into them a few years ago, and I've watched all but the last movie in the series. Oh and master works ;)

As for the movie I've been dictated it's a great choice. I've picked it up a few times, but always found something else to watch instead. Now I have no excuse! I also enjoy A Home at the End of the World, but of Farrell's smaller movies I prefer Tigerland.
Strikeouts are boring - besides that, they're fascist.  Throw some ground balls.  More democratic.
