No, not really, it's just that those two films best exemplify the manic, creative genius of Sturges.

I'm a big fan of McGinty, Conquering Hero, Morgan's Creek and Lady Eve. I love Sullivan's Travels and Unfaithfully Yours. But I'd marry The Palm Beach Story. You can't beat the Wienie King.

I've only seen Sullivan's.  But that's enough to vote for it.

Hail the Conquering Hero! Preston Sturges, 1944

Eddie Bracken plays some random loser who tried to join the marines, but couldn't because of his problems with hay fever. Still, he sent letters to his mom pretending he was at the war. One day, feeling depressed and slovenly, he meets a bunch of marines, and gets roped into going back to town. Soon enough, the town goes crazy about the returning hero, and somehow he gets involved in the race for mayor. Politics and democracy are all a personality game. The hero is what everyone focuses on. Bracken barely says anything, while everyone around him makes a huge fuss. All of which is very funny and loud (as masses of people tend to be). Bracken even gets to go all dark and stuff at points, talking about how ashamed he is about what he's doing (or, rather, letting happen). The supporting marines also give good turns (particularly, the one with the mommy issues), and end up solving the whole thing. Cuz that's what US marines do, goddamn it. They can do anything. That's what this film says. Or maybe they were just bored and wanted to repay the drinks. Who knows? I just know it was a swell time.

I haven't managed to watch that one yet.  Eddie Bracken scares me away.

He's way more tolerable in this than in The Miracle of Morgan's Creek.

Good to know.  I definitely need to give it a chance sometime.
