I still haven't caught up with his work.

Only seen Mononoke Spirited Away.

I don't quite understand the love for SA - guess I need to watch it again or watch more Miyazki.

for me the story takes a backseat in most miyazaki films. what he is most talented at, and it's something few animators can do, is conceptualizing entirely fantastic worlds that are still somewhat grounded in reality.  he makes us believe that these places, airships, witches, and forest gods do exist somewhere; that's a beautiful feeling.

I watched Spirited Away and was unimpressed. Then again, I'm unimpressed with anime to begin with...

I just don't see what people like in the style.

that's like saying I didn't like Natural Born Killers. I don't see what people like in this live action movies.

Akira and Spirited Away are completely different movies. You can't just lump them all in together.
So are you saying Spirited Away is one of his bad films? My sources would tell me otherwise. If that's the case I'll give him another go.

No, it's great. My statement was more about anime in general.

I've been pondering a response to this thread for a couple days and have become quite frustrated at not being able to come up with words that would explain my deep love for Miyazaki films (most notably Mononoke, Nausicaa, and Spirited Away).

The aura, the experience, of a these films is so instantly enchanting, so captivatingly complex, so fantastically real! And his characters! I love his heroes; so selfless, loving, and determined. His films don't let my mind wander off to think about real life. When I'm feeling down, they always life my spirits. I've found no end to their replay value either. I don't think I could ever say enough to do them justice.

I didn't experience such captivating emotions when watching the few Miyazaki films that I have seen. My reasons for rating him highly is really for the quality of the movies themselves. Chief among the criteria here is the imagination and creativity in action and the quality of the animation itself.

I couldn't vote in this poll.

I've seen Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, but as hard as I try, I just can't get into Anime. It just looks too cheesy when compared to animation I've grown up with.
