Miike, Takashi
« on: August 12, 2008, 12:36:34 AM »
[NOTE: I didn't have the room to include his entire filmography in the poll.  He's directed an amazing 37 movies this decade.  I just picked out more well known titles.]

I had to do a different poll for Takashi Miike because he's such a different director.  Usually working at a pace that would kill most filmmakers, Miike's style is taking whatever script lands on his desk and doing what he can with it.  He's kind of like Christopher Walken... sometimes the films are inspired, often they're not so good, but they're rarely dull.

Some feel that Miike could be a much greater director if he slowed down a little and took time to get things right, but I've seen enough to know he just doesn't think that way.  His films overflow with creative ideas, moments where you go "I've never seen that in a movie before."  But they're often too far out to be worth spending too much time on.  An excellent example is Hazard City which features a cock fight done in bullet time as well as a gangster whose spilled blood spells out "LOVE".  Tonally, these ideas work but it's all a few degrees beyond the norm.

His best known film is probably also his least experimental, the shock horror classic, Audition.  Many of his films have a strong cult following, and they often deserve it.  I wanted to offer him up for discussion because I like that he's out there trying new stuff, and I will watch pretty much anything he makes.  He's great for those of you who think it's all been done before.  I wouldn't call him a Great Director, but certainly one who deserves a mention.

I've seen most of his work and if I had to do a Top 5, it would be...

1 - Ichi The Killer
2 - Fudoh: The New Generation
3 - Rainy Dog
4 - Audition
5 - Shinjuku Triad Society

I've only seen Audition so far and wasn't overly inspired to check out his other films ... though I'm sure I will eventually.  Certainly once the 90s Far East Bracket kicks off!

One of my favourite working filmmakers. His output rate is insane! Sometimes the quality lags, but he's always so damn varied and creative. I'll keep coming back again and again.

Izo - god what was that.

I'll start watching his films when he slows to a pace I can manage (does this guy ever even get a cold?)
