Speaking of which...

Ace Attorney (Takashi Miike, 2013)
The costumes are cheesy. They seriously look like mediocre cosplay. So fake. The design of the courtroom looks incredibly flimsy (maybe that was the point?). The special effects are laughably bad. You can tell the budget for this wasn't great. The cinematography is sporadic. Sometimes it can be pretty bland. Otherwise, I am surprised how much I liked this? I love the video games, so there might be a little bias, but the way it was adapted put me back on my toes even though I know the stories. They cut out several cases from the first game and shortened one, but fans won't notice much of a change. They translated all of the over-the-top ridiculousness from the video game into this film surprisingly well. All of the actors were committed 100% which turns the film more into a comedy than the video game was. I haven't laughed this much since 21 Jump Street. And, yeah, it is totally a formulaic attorney procedural film, but all of the added twists to the proceedings (bad pun) or execution makes this just a joy to watch. Next time (please let there be a sequel!) I hope for a bigger budget so that the costumes, effects, and production design can go even more over-the-top.

I had to say none of them, but this is yet another director to add to my Netflix.

Shield of Straw (Takashi Miike, 2013)

This would be amazing if he had removed all the moral pontificating/spelling out the themes and just focused on the mission itself. This could've been on some Drug War-shit, but because of the protracted dialogue/death scenes, it's merely good. That said, this is still a ton of fun.

Lesson of the Evil

This is the real deal. Some of the most taut and disciplined filmmaking I've ever seen Miike employ. The pacing, camera work and color sense in this thing are just incredible. All of it at the service of a truly amoral, frequently risible film. That said, this is maybe the most unnerving and disturbing horror film since Halloween II. Here we have an incredible slow burn that unleashes into a full-on blood bath that methodically erases any bit of hope that we may have (there's none, our point of identification gradually shifts toward the demented protagonist throughout the film). The film's questionable decisions are basically what make it interesting, too (the totally bizarre English flashbacks, the invoking of a greater evil, the incredibly in your face ending song which has to be one of the sickest punchlines in any film in recent memory); so much of it shouldn't work, but Miike makes it stick through sheer verve. Great film.

Probably Audition is the better film.  But I'm always talking about the Happiness of the Katakuris.  One of the most memorable films of all time, and a B movie classic.  Yep, going for the latter.
