I've updated the second post in this thread, striking out a bunch of titles that look like they might be available.  My thinking is that a handful of films we let into the ballot will turn out to be unavailable in an acceptable format (no subtitles, cropped images, etc.), so we'll have a pool of alternates ready to take their places.  So there's no harm in being optimistic.

worm, can you double check that your library has the 1990s version of Peony Pavilion?  It looks like it's not the only film by that name; most sources I've looked at have had a 2001 version.

edgar, can you PM me a source for Don't Cry, Nanking?

is there a spot to post additional titles?  These from Kevin Lee's Shooting Down Pictures/Also Life Like post/list "A Speculative History of Japanese Cinema":

After Life, Hirokazu Kore-Eda, 1999, Japan; is available on Netflix

non-Netfliable:
The Bedroom, Hisayasu Sato, 1992, Japan

all other titles he lists are already included on the spreadsheet

This is one of the best films i've ever seen.

I'm going to post the list here and start a call for additional titles by the end of the day.  After Life is already on the list (it's currently sorted by availability then country then title).  As for The Bedroom, it sounds, um, interesting:

Quote from: graham from sydney australia
I admit a large reason I wanted to watch this was to see real life convicted cannibal Issei Sagawa, who fled France to live a life of semi-celebrity in Japan. Sure, it may be morally questionable to watch him exploiting his notoriety, but I'm a human being and by our very nature we are curious beings. That's why we can build 'stuff' and dogs can't... but I digress. Imagine Rocco Siffredi directing a script loosely based on Last Year At Marienbad and you come close to imaging the world of Hisayasu Sato's stylised S&M collages.
Fun!...?

Also on Lee's site, from Rosenbaum's 1000 essential films, and seemingly not on the spreadsheet:

The Actress, Stanley Kwan, 1992, Hong Kong
Comrades, Almost a Love Story, Peter Chan, 1997, Hong Kong

both not netflix available

perhaps these (and the others i noted) are on the list, kinda hard to track as dates seem to not match sometimes, also the titles are sometimes english, sometimes not.

The Actress is available, under the title Centre Stage (which is what everyone but Rosenbaum calls it).  Not at netflix, but you can buy it in a nice edition from yesasia.com (I've got it).

Yep, those are both on there.  I watched Comrades a few weeks ago myself (review is here).  It was just okay.  And Center Stage is on there as well, having been mentioned by both Rosenbaum and The End of Cinema.

Fer sure.  Too many right now, even.  I hope the balloting does its just in separating out the best ones.

(Hurry up, faceboy!  People are ready for this thing!)

I've been trying to refrain from asking what's on the list.  I'm very curious though.
