Are you including kung fu films?

Fer sure.  Too many right now, even.  I hope the balloting does its just in separating out the best ones.

(Hurry up, faceboy!  People are ready for this thing!)

Such a shame Bruce Lee didn't live to make films in the 90's.

I have acquiesced. My obsessive level of research will yield to the overwhelming desire to begin. Once pix posts the full list, everyone can continue to suggest films we may have neglected to include and we'll ballot next week.

Okay, here we go.  Here are the 301 titles currently under consideration for the bracket.  It was a nice, even 300 until skjerva had to go and dig up that damn Bedroom film.

Here's the plan as I understand it:

1) Between now and, say, Monday or Tuesday, we'll all look through this massive list for any deserving titles that haven't been mentioned yet.  I wouldn't be surprised if we add another twenty or thirty.  Actually, it'll probably be closer to fifty, but half of those will turn out to have been mentioned already under a alternate title.  (We tried to use that title the corresponds to the likely source of the film; so if Netflix lists the DVD under Twin Warriors, we went with that rather than The Tai-Chi Master.)

2) After we get the final list of titles under consideration, I'll put together a ballot that we'll use to try to cut this massive list down to 200 titles (if possible).  We'll also use the ballot to seed the films (at least the ones that some of us have seen before), create a pool of alternates (when titles turn out to be unavilable), and assign people matchups of films that will be new to them.  (At first glance, this probably looks like too many films to have to vote on, but when you realize you've only seen maybe thirty of them, it seems a lot more manageable.)

3) Bracket madness!

I tried to fake an IMDb link for these titles.  Hopefully they more or less work.

Great work guys. It's awesome that you came up with such an extensive list. Not to mention that you've found films that are from countries  we rarely associate with 'great cinema', such as Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines.
-Le Chiffre: You changed your shirt, Mr Bond. I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

How are you guys planning on see these?  I thought they were only available on old Asian discs (DVD, VCD, LD?) that don't have English subtitles.

Seconded.

I don't want to participate in the bracket, but that list is an excellent "what to watch" list, in and of itself. Just browsing the titles is interesting. Thanks for taking the time to do the research, guys!

Avistaz has a (currently unseeded) torrent of A Confucian Confusion with hardsubbed English and Mandarin titles.  Mahjong is trickier, but I'm told it's available through Kargarga, also with hardsubbed titles.  eMule has both films, but I'm not sure if they're subtitled in English (one looks like it might be have Italian titles), and I'm not seeing any files at opensubtitles.org.  But I'm still optimistic.

The Legend  (Corey Yuen, 1993)

It's only part one.  And the only audio option is an English dub.

Both Fong Sai Yuks are available at yesasia, in subtitled versions.  I have them.

Tai Chi Master is now available under its proper title, thanks to Dragon Dynasty.  the new version should be on netflix by now.

How about:

Johnnie To: The Heroic Trio 1 & 2
Various other Once Upon A Time In China sequels
Jackie Chan: Supercop, First Strike, Operation Condor, City Hunter
Jet Li: Black Mask, Dr. Wai And the Scripture With No Words
Wong Jing: God Of Gamblers 2-4, Kung Fu Cult Master (I have it on VHS, don't think there's a DVD), Last Hero In China, Tricky Brains and Tricky Master, Boys Are Easy
Tsui Hark: the Chinese Feast, the Banquet
Stephen Chow: All's Well Ends Well, All For The Winner
The End of Cinema
