Just some backgrond info:  Of the three people who had seen To Live prior to the bracket, one voted it Good and the two voted it just Fair.  There were no votes of Great, which is what kept it from being a top-seeded film.

pixote

Yeah, I was one of those three (can't remember where I ranked it).  I was underwhelmed by it, but I totally understand that (and why) a lot of people think it's "great".  It's by one of the top directors of the decade, it's got a great cast and tells a conventional story in quite pretty way.

Aren't there less complicated ways to have fun?
I've had fun so far.
So easy a monkey can do it!

We're here to have fun, sean  ;D

Is it working?

Aren't there less complicated ways to have fun?

I've had fun so far.

But you didn't answer the second question.  ;)

I just don't see why we can't have fun with first round matchups that make sense, I guess.

Maybe pix just wants to make the resurrection process as difficult as possible?

Actually, because there are so many unknown factors here (nobody really knows which films are supposed to be the 'great' ones, at least not all of them), I don't expect to put a limit on the resurrections this round.  I'll let through anything that approaches greatness (in my eyes, anyway).  Then, in the next round, the top-seeded films will be readjusted so that those films don't continue to be at a disadvantage.

Anyway, most of the first round matchups have been pretty good.  And I've enjoyed most of the write ups as well (even if I disagree with them).  I like when a well-regarded movie loses for it to be because a more obscure movie turns out to be really good (which has happened a few times already), not because it was just matched up against an even more well-regarded movie.  I want to see Jin-Roh and Sleeping Man because they pulled off big upsets, isn't that what makes this fun?

Ah, okay, I get what you're saying now.  And I agree.  I guess the trick is that not everyone is all that familiar with these films or even knows that Zhang's 90s films are well-regarded, etc.  Maybe I should be pointing that stuff out?

That makes sense.  To that end, designing the first round matchups around some kind of familiarity index would be more helpful, wouldn't it?  Having the famous films/directors/stars going up against the more obscure works.  If the lesser known film wins, then it's a true upset, and all the lesser known films would get themselves watched (I can foresee us running low on participants when all that's left are matchups between obscure films, especially if we keep matching up all the Gong Li films against each other (Concubine vs. Temptress Moon?!?))

Anyway, since you've not put a limit on the number of resurrections after this round, most of my whining is pointless.  I am having fun, we're all awesome, group hug.

Maybe.  If you're going to watch them all anyway, it doesn't really matter.
