My ignorance is a major part of my enjoyment of this bracket. The films' reputations will almost never precede them, at least not in the first round. I'm so unfamiliar with anything 'far east' (directors, actors, styles, etc) it makes for a really pure movie watching experience in ways that aren't possible with western film.

I am in complete agreement with this. Ignorance FTW!

By the way, pixote, I've got a hold of Not One Less and Give It All, so my inspirational stories starring teenage girls matchup is a go.

First verdict from me today, tomorrow tops, depending on the breaks.
Wanting for Thor what Thor wants for Thor.

Do people like seeing the full list of films in this post, or should I delete the ones that are currently struck out?

It'd probably make it easier to see what's available when we're picking films. Is the full list available in the other thread?

edit: oh wait, that link is the other thread. Hmm...

I'm thinking about maybe putting the full list in the first post of this thread, and then have the other thread just show the still-available films...

Okay, I updated the first post of this thread with the complete list of films in the bracket (now at 270), and the Results and Schedule thread now lists only the films awaiting a first round matchup (down to 148).

I took out some titles that appear to be more or less unavailable (not counting VHS):

Blush  (Li Shaohong, 1994, China)
Chizuko's Younger Sister  (Nobuhiko Obayashi, 1991, Japan)
The Day the Sun Turned Cold  (Ho Yim, 1994, Hong Kong)
Down the Drain  (Shinobu Yaguchi, 1993, Japan)
The Drive  (Shunichi Nagasaki, 1992, Japan)
Ermo  (Zhou Xiaowen, 1994, China)
Family Happiness  (Clifton Ko, 1992, Hong Kong)
Red Firecracker, Green Firecracker  (He Ping, 1994, China)
Song of the Exile  (Ann Hui, 1990, Hong Kong)
To Live and Die in Tsimshatsui  (Lau Wai-keung / Wong Jing, 1994, Hong Kong)
To the Starry Island  (Park Kwang-su, 1993, South Korea)

I also added back a few that I've now tracked down:

City of the Rising Sun  (Sung-su Kim, 1998, South Korea)
Mr. Zhao  (Lu Yue, 1998, China)
Shanghai Fever  (Guoli Li, 1994, China)

There are a few new notes in there, too, including this key one:  "I have hunted down a copy of all these films, so if there's something you can't find, just let me know."
