Then again I can't remember which country half the films I watch were from right now...

You had:

China over Hong Kong
Hong Kong over Japan
Japan over Hong Kong
South Korea over Hong Kong

...plus two matchups of all Hong Kong films and one all Japan matchups.

pixote

Interesting, this just further confirms my suspicions that I'm a babbling idiot who has no idea what he's talking about!  ;D

Oops, had that backwards.  Two all Japan matchups and one all Hong Jong matchups.

From what I can remember, I think most of your favorite discoveries were from Japan (My Neighbors the Yamadas, Audition, Adrenaline Drive), with the exceptions of the Raise the Red Lantern (China) and Autumn Moon (Hong Kong).

That sounds about right, and out of all of those I'd say Audition and Lantern were the two films that left the biggest mark on me. That is why I love these brackets though, it allows, or forces, me to discover so many films I otherwise might never have made the time for. So thanks Pix. :)

Thinking back on the films I've watched I would say Japan probably left the biggest impact on me as well.

...perhaps because of the 40 films you watched, 23 were from Japan.  :P

What was your favorite non-Japanese film?  Comrades, Almost a Love Story?

:D That's weird...Most of my matchups were almost entirely random selections.

What was your favorite non-Japanese film?  Comrades, Almost a Love Story?

That appears to be accurate. :)

It sounds like you have these stats already figured, pix. If so, where do I fall?

You had the best luck with China, I think.  You advanced six films from there (though three of them were matched up against other Chinese films).  You advanced four films from Hong  Kong (though two were matched up against other Hong Kong films); five films from Japan (though three were matched up against other Japanese films); one film from South Korea (over another film from South Korea); and a Taiwanese film over a Vietnamese film.

What were your favorite discoveries among the winners?

Country Teachers (China)
The Road Home (China)
Seventeen Years (China)
Woman Sesame Oil Maker (China)
Don't Cry, Nanking (China)
A Mongolian Tale (China)
Lost and Found (Hong Kong)
Supercop (Hong Kong)
The Tai-Chi Master (Hong Kong)
Summer Snow (Hong Kong)
Perfect Blue (Japan)
Madadayo (Japan)
Talking Head (Japan)
Dr. Akagi (Japan)
Moonlight Whispers (Japan)
Christmas in August (South Korea)
Pushing Hands (Taiwan)

Loved:
1. Seventeen Years (China)
2. Supercop (Hong Kong)
3. Perfect Blue (Japan)
4. The Road Home (China)

Liked:
5. The Tai-Chi Master (Hong Kong)
6. Country Teachers (China)
7. Christmas in August (South Korea)
8. Summer Snow (Hong Kong)
9. Woman Sesame Oil Maker (China)
10. Pushing Hands (Taiwan)
11. Moonlight Whispers (Japan)
12. Lost and Found (Hong Kong)

It was ok:
13. A Mongolian Tale (China)
14. Don't Cry, Nanking (China)

Disliked/Hated:
15. Madadayo (Japan)
16. Dr. Akagi (Japan)
17. Talking Head (Japan)

Yeah, this seems accurate. In my head I knew me and Japan weren't meshing... this just confirms it. I just find the characters don't talk enough. I don't find their contemplation meaningful. Of course I'm just generalizing, so don't read too much into it. Japan sure knows how to do animation though :)

Nice.  You should save that post for next week because that's exactly the format we're going to use (the four categories) to reseed the films for the second round.
