Fifth round matchups are now available. Here's the randomized order in which matchups will be selected:

1. Sam the Cinema Snob
2. Knocked Out Loaded
3. Jared
4. BlueVoid
5. Teproc
6. Sandy
7. ProperCharlie
8. smirnoff
9. pixote
10. PeacefulAnarchy
11. oldkid
12. Beavermoose

The possible matchups are listed in this post. It's the same concept as before — matching up one film in blue with one film in black — except now the films are split into four groups. So, for example, Chungking Express (a blue film in Group A), has to be matched up against either Cageman, Cure, Farewell My Concubine, or Moving (the four films in black in Group A).

Remember, this round is a best-of-three, so you'll have the choice of either creating your own matchup (from the unmatched films) or joining onto an existing matchup. You can even team up with someone else and present a combined verdict (though that's optional). If the first two people don't agree on which film in a matchup should advance, then it'll go back up for grabs for a third person to break the tie.

Hopefully that doesn't sound overly complicated. I'm sure it'll seem straightforward once we get moving.

Okay, Sam, you're up!

Yay !

Don't know how to feel about all the films I advanced save one (Raise the Red Lantern) being in the lower bracket. I guess it means I've got good times ahead of me ?

I do feel bad for the black films in the A bracket. They're doomed !

Group B has the most I haven't seen and I'm thinking After Life vs. Rebels of the Neon God.

I can take on Flowers Of Shanghai against Hard Boiled in group D.

Movies I haven't seen really starting to thin out! I think 90% of the ones I've watch have been a part of this too so that is pretty neat.

I'll do The Scent of Green Papaya vs After the Rain in Group B

GROUP C

Comrades, Almost a Love Story  (Peter Chan, 1996, Hong Kong)  [YouTube]
Happy Together  (Wong Kar-Wai, 1997, Hong Kong)  [DVD/BD, YouTube]
Only Yesterday  (Isao Takahata, 1991, Japan)  [DVD/BD]
Whisper of the Heart  (Yoshifumi Kondo, 1995, Japan)  [DVD/BD]
Audition  (Takashi Miike, 1999, Japan)  [DVD/BD, Digital]
Days of Being Wild  (Wong Kar-Wai, 1991, Hong Kong)  [DVD/BD]
Like Grains of Sand  (Ryosuke Hashiguchi, 1995, Japan)
Made in Hong Kong  (Fruit Chan, 1997, Hong Kong)  [YouTube]

The final bracket of 32 films contains eleven resurrected films (I'm relevant!), six of which all fell into this same group.

I do feel bad for the black films in the A bracket. They're doomed !

Here's how these final films fared against each other in the earlier rounds:

Rice People defeated Spring in My Hometown (Thor, Round 1)
Rice People defeated Raise the Red Lantern (smirnoff, Round 3)
Vive L'Amour defeated Made in Hong Kong (Jared, Round 3)
After the Rain defeated Hard Boiled (smirnoff, Round 4)
Rice People defeated Audition (Teproc, Round 4)
Farewell My Concubine defeated Only Yesterday (oldkid, Round 4)

Clearly whatever blue film faces Rice People is in trouble. What a giant killer.
