The Top Directors Working Today: Christopher Nolan
« on: August 19, 2008, 09:47:38 PM »
I've waited all Summer to get to Nolan.  The thrill of The Dark Knight is still strong, and will probably skew the numbers a bit, but this one should be a lot of fun anyways.

I'm a big Nolan fan, starting with Memento, currently my #11 film of the decade.  I enjoy Following and The Prestige more than most, and Batman Begins was my #1 film of 2005.  He's always been a great intellectual filmmaker to me, and I think he has the cool reserve that will keep him from getting stuck trying to top his biggest success.

The Prestige is one of my favourite films of the decade. As is Memento. Dark Knight is the best film of the year, and even Insomnia was a good film. Nolan is the best modern working director.

1. Dark Knight
2. Memento
3. Insomnia
4. Batman Begins
5. Following
6. The Prestige
= all very good to great films and wonderful technical achievements.  I think he is a little shakier coaxing good performances out of his actors, there's usually at least one weak link in every film but as far as this poll goes he is and has always been great.

I never thought he was anything special.

1. Dark Knight
2. Memento
3. Batman Begins
4. The Prestige

I don't hate any of his movies, but I don't love any of them either.  He's always right around mediocre.

He is right up there with PTA and the Coens and Danny Boyle as the best directors around right now.

Except that he's better than Danny Boyle, and I trust him more as a director than PTA. I can't argue with the Coens.

I'll accept Coens and PTA, but I can't see your Boyle. I'm sorry. The only reason I rate PTA lower is because he is way too in love with his abilities as a director. Nolan is very understated whereas PTA likes to shove in your face how amazing he is and how amazing his actors are. I love all of his films, arguably more than Nolan's in a couple of cases, but I think There Will Be Blood was a step down for him. It's the perfect example, as good as the film is, of my problems with PTA. What it comes down to is that if I had to make a choice between seeing the next Nolan film or the next PTA film I'd be more inclined to side with Nolan. I just trust him more.
