Suggestion: Movies about Rock and Roll
« on: July 12, 2006, 12:44:04 AM »
My list would be divided into two groups. I separated the documentaries from the movies because in my opinion rock docs are a whole other animal.  They mainly focus on live performances instead of a story.

In the movie category:
5. A Star Is Born (1976)
4. Almost Famous
3. Backbeat
2. This is Spinal Tap
1. A Hard Day's Night

In the documentary category:
5. Decline of the Western Civilization Parts 1 & 2
4. Gimme Shelter
3. Monterey Pop
2. Don't Look Back
1. Woodstock

For the films list, I would also consider adding:

The Idolmaker
Get Crazy!
Streets of Fire
Stardust
Mumford, the All Purpose Nothing

I will admit I never saw them but they all sounds like a something I would want to watch.

Great idea for a marathon. As far as documentaries go, "DIG!" would have to be #1 on my list. Incredibly powerful stuff.  Woodstock would be another must. Also: Gimme Shelter and Decline.

I have watched "Streets of Fire" my first thought was this was how they should have made "The Bodyguard".

Maybe you guys can tell me this is there any more recent Rock and Roll documentories besides "Somekind of Monster" or as it should have been titled: "Spinal Tap Part 2"?

"DIG!" is recent. Two or three years old I think.

I have somewhere on my future documentaries list...

Viva Morrissey
New York Doll

Doll is in my long 'flix queue, and Viva Morrissey was at a local film festival but I didn't get to see it.

I'd imagine A Hard Day's Night would be hard to leave off any short-list of rock and roll films.  And the 1995 PBS Rock & Roll documentary series, produced by WGBH and the BBC, would be on my list.

Standing in the Shadows of Motown was excellent, and that's not really my kind of music.
