He really is an amazing artist - his primary focus is media and how it influences us.  He uses video in many of films and generally melodramatic themes of death and loss, resurrection, history and its consequences.  He's a tough one at first, but his best films are incredibly rewarding:  The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica, Felicia's Journey, the devastating true account of the Armenian genocide portrayed as a film within a film within a film, Ararat, and possibly my favorite Where the Truth Lies.  Start there.

Haven't seen all of them, but, from the ones I have seen, Ararat is the only one I've liked.

Sweet Hereafter for now, though I bet a second look at Family Viewing would put it in my top spot.

Wow, I had a very different experience with that one, I guess.  Not at all a fan.

Wait.. I have seen Exotica as well. I just forgot about it. Elias Koteas is in it, right? I have to say... it was a while ago... but I remember it seemed really amateurish... almost like an extended episode of the Red Show Diaries...

Maybe I need to see it again. I would never have guessed it was by the same guy who did The Sweet Hereafter

Watch it again, the "porno" is presented in a stupidly comical way for effect - the thrust of the film is the death of a child - a theme that permeates Sweet Hereafter as well.  His films also feature the wonderful music of Mychael Danna. Danna is brilliant - http://www.mychaeldanna.com/
