So difficult to choose.
Great Expectations Martita Hunt, so extravagant an actress. And she popped up in Les espions, which surprised me.
The Bridge on the River Kwai Guinness and Holden, great pairing.
Lawrence of Arabia Those eyes!

And Robert Mitchum was brill in Ryan's Daughter, although Sarah Miles was not

Brief Encounter David Lean, 1945

Some random lady and some random guy find that they're totally hot for each other. And for a few hours once a week, they begin to meet up. Their relationship is a breath of fresh air, a reprieve from repressed emotional states or whatever. But these feelings of longing and barely-there british passion are smothered, completely smothered by the Celia Johnson's narration, which makes everything irrelevant. It's been quite a while since the use of narration has bothered me this much. Lean visualizes the fleeting nature of the romance quite adeptly by expertly using the train station, the shadows of which almost seem to transport the lovers to another place. But, still, it's all too repressed and polite and bloodless. Also, frankly, it's quite rushed. Not that I didn't buy it, but the individual moments between the couple never seemed to have a life of their own. They ended before they started, if that makes sense. Although that's probably part of what the film's going for. Anyway, I'd rather watch The Bridges of Madison County. Sexier times ahead.

I mostly agree. I liked Brief Encounter, but it's too ordinary for something considered a classic. It's like how you can appreciate Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast, but you can never shake what Disney Animation did with the material. You watch this and all you want to do is swap it for In the Mood For Love.

It is a film that probably suffers from being too brief.

I must be the only person on this forum who isn't bothered by narration in a film. It's a tool, plain and simple. And in this film, it works. It shows through its mundane nature, how safe, but repetitively dull, Laura's life really is. Without her narration, you really wouldn't have any idea what kind of person she is, and why this dalliance could happen.
