Football (or soccer)
« on: August 31, 2008, 01:04:32 PM »
Wassup filmspotters. I noticed that some you are football fans and know many of the game's players and teams. Well, so am I (I'm the sorry sap stuck in 5th place in the fantasy league...). Football isn't the most popular sport in Canada, but it's nonetheless accessible, and I've been hooked on it for about 5 years now. I was thinking of starting a simple 'non-movie' thread about the beautiful game. What's your favorite team? Why? Favorite players, thoughts, predictions, transfer buzz. We've got a whole season of football ahead of us and I love talking about the sport, so let's get some conversations going.

English Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A, Bundesliga, Scottish Premier League, Champions League, MLS... whatever you enjoy most matters not. Only some good football banter!

About time we had a thread for this!
I haven't been watching a lot of League football these past years but am determined to keep up with the Bundesliga and the Premier League top teams this season. Personally, I'm probably most curious about how Chelsea and Munich will perform under their new coaches (Scolari and Klinsmann respectively).

I though Chelsea were a bit lazy today and the Spurs probably deserved their one point. Bayern on the other hand pretty much killed Berlin 4-1 and finally got their first victory of the season.

I think Bayern is playing n a league of their own. If you look at how last season played out, it sort felt a bit like what happens when Lyon take the Ligue 1. Before this weekend, Bayern had not played terribly well this year, but I don't expect that to be the case for very long.

Chelsea were not at their best today. We saw what they're capable of two weeks ago when they thrashed Porstmouth. Scolari's challenge now is to find the best way to use the tools at his disposal. In terms of the players the squad has, there's absolutely no problem. How can there be? Terry, Lampard, Ballack, Belletti, Essien, Deco... the fact of the matter is the team doesn't seem to have jelled very well so far.

On another note, I was surprised to see Rangers give such a whipping to Celtic. That must have hurt for Celtic fans. Wasn't that game at the Park too?

That's probably true but they haven't done very well internationally (they took a beating by St.Petersburg in the UEFA Cup semi-finals in May. After their performance against Manchester the other day, Zenit is probably a team to look out for aswell.) which is why they hired Klinsmann. They haven't done much in terms of transfers yet, although they got Massimo Oddo from Milan the other day.

I was pleased that Spurs didn't lose. We desperately need some more firepower and for Jenas to play in a more attacking role, but i'm glad Bent scored, though should help him. It's going to take time for the new midfield to gel.

I was surprised to see Belletti playing in central midfield for Chelsea. You'd think with all their resources and 47 midfielders they'd be able to find someone else to play there...

Yes, I recall the spanking Bayern received in the UEFA Cup semifinal last season. Few people had predicted such a glaring result. Yes, there,s always a possibility of a strong team getting kicked out of a tournament, but not in such resounding fashion. When I mentioned earlier Bayern playing in a league of their own, I was, I admit, referring far more to the domestic league than any of the European league, UEFA or Champions.
They weren't in the Champions last year, and the last couple of times that they did participate, they were handed some rather convincing defeats. I think Klinsmann can guide them to some more domestic success, but I'm hesitating before saying that they can be a force to be reckoned with in Europe.

With regards to Belletti playing in midfield, I think Scolari is just using some temporary strategies before a healthy Ballack returns. Mind you, in their first three matches, they used different center midfielders (not counting Deco of course). Ballack really became a force in the Chelsea midfield last season, and they're hoping for more of that this year, but he's not fit, so...

As for Spurs, I was impressed with how they managed to nullify the Chelsea attack today, especially given that the game was at the Bridge. There is the issue of the Chelsea midfield problem, but you still have to give credit to Spurs for not throwing in the towel given how pathetic their first two games were. With the Berbatov saga behind them (or almost), I see Spurs only getting better after this. Can they steal fourth spot? Maybe not, but they shouldn't, on paper at least, have trouble playing for a UEFA Cup spot.

Chelsea's problem is they are trying to accomadate too many players. Essien, Lampard, Ballack & Deco all play in the same position. Then they have wingers like Joe Cole. Up front they have Drogba & Anelka and yet they're looking for Robinho. They are going to have to bench some big players if they want a chance of beating the big teams.
