Oddly, I rather disliked the same two "great" films as Martin. Been catching up on some of Renoirs stuff lately. Have rewatched all the top three on my list and they got even better.

1. Grand Illusion
2. A Day in the Country
3. The Rules of the Game
4. La Bete Humaine
5. The Lower Depths
6. The Golden Coach
7. The Woman on the Beach
8. Boudu Saved From Drowning
9. The River

A Day in the Country is free on Hulu!  Incentive: not on Region 1 DVD.  Extra incentive: its runtime is only 40 minutes.

This Land is Mine (1943)
* * * - Good
It's war propaganda, but delivered by the awakening of Charles Laughton's social conscience, which means there are some compelling speeches. George Sanders behaves cowardly, immediately folding to the occupying Nazi forces. So, that's a new suit on him. Character actor Una O'Connor gets to do some Sally Field level "tough mother" acting.
