I quite like La Grande Illusion.  And I just watched The River which was really fantastic.  The visuals and music are wondrous.  It's based on a book by Rumer Godden (author of Black Narcissus) so it has a unique feminine POV.

I found Rules of the Game to be decent enough but far far FAR less than one of the best movies of all time.  But then I don't speak french and it's very dialogue heavy so it's probably easier to enjoy if you speak french.  And the fact that it caused a scandal in France 70 years ago doesn't mean much to me. *shrug*

Edit: Just watched Scorsese's interview included on The River criterion release and he also makes some brief comments on Rules of the Game, and wow his thoughts captured much of my feelings on that movie.

La Règle du Jeu
La Grande Illusion
Le Crime de Monsieur Lange
Boudu Sauvé des Eaux
La Chienne

I know feel like the movies are like are exceptions in his filmography. I don't think I am going to try any more of his movies.

Would you say Lange is one of the ones you like or don't like? Les bas-fonds and probably La Bête humaine seem like decent bets for you. Maybe it's Michel Simon you should avoid?

Yeah, I pretty much want to stay away from Michel Simon from now on. Lange was okay, not splendid or anything, but serviceable.

I am  always a bit wary of Zola adaptations.

I must say, Renoir is much more entertaining when he's filming the upper class.

The Little Match Girl  (Jean Renoir & Jean Tédesco, 1928)

Dammit, I should have left well enough alone. What I remembered as a perfect little fairy tale, equally hypnotic and playful — despite being wrapped in tragedy — now seems like a clumsy but ambitious student film. There's a lack of rhythm to the editing that completely belies my memory of poetry in motion. I appreciate the artificiality of Renoir's mise-en-scène but not of Catherine Hessling's inept performance as the title character. There are a few wonderful moments of fantasy and whimsy, but overall I'm as disappointed as I was when I revisited Rien que les heures. Entr'acte had damn better hold up!

Grade: C+

The Diary of a Chambermaid (1946)
★ ★
If good direction is about management of tone, then I raise an eye suspiciously at Renoir. Paulette Goddard, a lightweight actress who can be great with lightweight material, plays the chambermaid who starts a new job with a burst of independence as she puts her foot down and puts the household in its place. I can see the seeds of class satire between the wealthy and the workers and casting the world's worst housekeeper Judith Anderson (Rebecca) as the head of the house is an inspired flip. However, the characters are seriously weird and more than a little deranged. There's an unusual amount of murder, to both humans and animals, and it breaks any reality Renoir might need for his talking points to have real-life parallels.
