Finally, it's switches back to the couple one more time, but now, the couple's skin is covered in beads of sweat, indicating to the viewer that the rest of the film is a love story.

And then it moves on to scene of horror and mutliation. Or did I imagine that?

NOT a Love Story.

Providence (1977)
* * ½
Doing a little research I learned that Resnais didn't stop making enigmatic puzzle boxes after Marienbad. That approach was something he did with at least half his work, and this is one of those but also a bit different. The tongue-in-cheek arrogant tone of the narrator (John Gielgud) who also has moments of crude dialogue puts a comic meta-layer on the story (which opens with sweeping landscape shots that reminded me of Marienbad.) This doesn't quite slip into being a parody of Resnais, but it wouldn't need much of a push to be one. An odd duck for sure, one that makes me curious to see more Resnais, but only when I'm in the mood... which I don't think I ever will be.

Last Year at Marienbad
★ ★ ★ - Good

This came up on a recent podcast and reminded me that I had only seen it once and it was over 10 years ago. While I find the puzzle-plot more frustrating than fun or intriguing, the mood enveloping it is so strong it makes this the best version of what it's going for. As a WTF mind-bender, it's the top of the  mountain and classy to boot. Much of what I wrote earlier held true this time, especially about the editing being just as vital as the cinematography. Older and wiser, I can see myself returning to this far more frequently than I have before and perhaps appreciating it more with each viewing, like Synecdoche, New York.

...or maybe not
