I'm going a little off here.. but A Very Long Engagement a french love story staring Audrey Tautou has some really great WWI visuals. Also All Quiet on the Western Front(this is far from overlooked but not really talked about) was filmed in between WWI and WWII is a rare look at German
soldier life in this time.

Now tell me I suck for bringing these up...
Jack Burton: What's in the flask, Egg? Magic potion?
Egg Shen: Yeah.
Jack Burton: Thought so, good. What do we do, drink it?
Egg Shen: Yeah!
Jack Burton: Good, thought so.

I watched A Midnight Clear, which I liked, but it merged in my head with Joyeux NoŽl. Are these the same movie? I'm having trouble remembering what things came from which movie.

I'm interested in Tigerland. I'm going to look for that.

I'm glad you watched Midnight Clear.  It holds a very high place in my esteem.

I really really liked this film. And yes, great and moving war scenes. The DVD has an interesting documentary about the making of those scenes, which I also recommend.

If you ever get the chance to see the 1968 Russian version of War and Peace, I would recommend it.  It's seven hours but it's worth every second.  The battle sequences are amazing.

A 1993 German film Stalingrad shows the events of the Stalingrad battle from a point of view of a few German soldiers. Extremely powerful stuff.

The Victors and The Big Red One are two I've been meaning to check out - anyone seen those?

Fuller's Fixed Bayonets, I prefer to TBRO. I think by extension, his Steel Helmets might be as good, but try getting it in the UK.

Bitter Victory has a lot of fans around here, and my love of Monte Hellman extends to Back Door To Hell.

When we did the 1957 Retro Filmspots I watched Anthony Mann's Men in War and thought it was really good.

Just watched Lacombe, Lucien.  Not exactly a war film, but a wartime film.  Amazing.
Do you know who I am?

Considering this thread was made over 6 years ago, the original poster is almost certainly never going to get this recommendation. But I'll take any chance to plug Story of G.I. Joe, with Robert Mitchum and Burgess Meredith.
