Please suggest some overlooked war films
« on: July 21, 2006, 11:38:59 PM »
I'm looking for overlooked films about war (any era) or movies set in medieval times (that have battles.) All the most common films I have already seen and I am having trouble coming up with new ideas.  I was hoping someone could suggest some overlooked gems that I wouldn't think of.  Help please.

Some of these are more overlooked than others:

Zulu
The Flying Leathernecks
The Longest Day
A Bridge Too Far
Battleground
Hell Is For Heroes
Alexander Nevsky
The End of Cinema

Seattle Screen Scene

Here are a couple more for your list:

  • The Guns of Navarone
  • Heros of Telemark
  • Where Eagles Dare

Each of them is a real war movie!

The Cranes are Flying

Easily the best movie about civilians in war.  A Russian movie set during WWII about a young woman whose lover is sent to the front.  An absolute must watch masterpiece, yet very much unheard off in the west.

Battle of Algiers

The best movie about asymetric warfare between insurgents and a modernised army.  Tells the tale of the Algerian revolt against the French.  Great discussion of torture and terrorism, very topical for our times.

I’ve lied to men who wear belts. I’ve lied to men who wear suspenders. But I’d never be so stupid as to lie to a man who wears both a belt and suspenders.

The Wooden Horse: I think, seeing this about 10 years ago, it must have been one of the first black & white films I saw, sat all the way through, and thoroughly enjoyed. My memory of it is hazy, but I would tentatively place it above The Great Escape (a film you get really sick of hearing about, growing up in Britain.)

Also, No Man's Land ( more of a play than a film, it's worth checking out) and Waterloo (epic battles scenes still look fabulous; reminds me of Barry Lyndon) and Millions Like Us (Powell & Pressburger were not the only ones making excellent propaganda films!)

I would, like Winrit, like to hear some medieval suggestions.

I wasn't crazy about it, but many like OVERLORD (Stuart Cooper, 1975) and it's certainly a different take.

My favorite is Melville's ARMY OF SHADOWS, although some might not consider it a war film at all.

Peter Weir's GALLIPOLI is also worth a look.
