Done.
-Le Chiffre: You changed your shirt, Mr Bond. I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

And done. Stupid election. I thought we weren't supposed to have an election for another 2 years. Silly Harper, passing laws for political gain only to backtrack on said laws for even more political gain. Though it doesn't seem to have gained him much.

The "fixed-date" law changed only the maximum duration of a Parliament, by ensuring that it ends no later than October in its fourth calendar year after commencement, but the law leaves the possibility of an earlier end unaffected. But you're right that the PM calling this election was certainly contrary to the spirit of the legislation, and that's important too.

The new law doesn't affect the life of a minority government. If enough opposition MPs vote against a minority governing party, then the Governor General will call an election after a meeting with the PM. The particular situation now is that Harper went to the GG for an election before any Parliament work was attempted. He simply thought 'Parliament isn't going to work.' Now he might pay for it.

I really don't see the Conservatives escaping this with more than another minority, and even then it could become a Liberal minority.

Right, if the House loses confidence in the government then parliament is dissolved and an election is called, the new law did not change that. But that's not what happened here.

In this case the PM had the GG dissolve parliament because he felt it was an opportune time for his party, contrary to the spirit of his own fixed-election legislation.

Oh I agree with that completely. I think we used different words, that's all.

Political junkies have fun!

I'm at home all night watching movies, CBC and Radio-Canada live streaming all night long.
