Nice.

I actually voted Liberal in Outremont. Looks like my vote did count.

And that right there is exactly the problem with our electoral system.

Jack Layton is the only one I think looks the part. I would be fine if he was the face of Canada. NDP is hit and miss for me.

Harper is bad. If he was leader we'd have been in Iraq from the start.

Dion is a fluke of a party leader, and will thankfully be tossed after this is over.

May couldn't even win her own riding  ::) A shame.

We could be back to the polls pretty quick, so I'm not too sure how much all this means.

Stéphane Dion must now go through a vote of confidence in his own Party (this is according to the constitution of the party itself). Now, he may choose to stay even if he has 51% support, but I don't think he would be foolish enough for that. Dion will not be the person who brings the Liberals back to power. Weren't the polls in recent days saying that the Liberals were starting to look rather good, or at least okay. Gees, this result was worse than in 2006 for them...

The Conservatives did well, but not well enough. I think the party and its supporters like Harper, but it stands to reason that was his big chance to have that majority. He failed. Now I'm not saying that he's out the door because of that, but I wonder what the dynamic of the party will be now. The hopes for Québec seats were pretty high  and that didn't work out at all.

The NDP did better than usual. So far they're at 38 seats, which is about 7-8 better than last time. Jack Layton can rant all he wants, you knew the results weren't going to be better than this, and this was pretty good already.

The Bloc, I hate to say it, can congratulate themselves. Their support may have dropped somewhat but they made it clear in the last week of the campaign that only they could prevent the Conservatives from obtaining a majority. That prophesy turned to be true.

The Green Party... Oh Green Party... Proportional representation would really help these guys a lot. Alas, as it stands, they bite dust, which is a shame because about 10% of the population supports them.

I hope you enjoyed the campaign, which isn't always an easy thing to enjoy. Let a new Parliamentary session begin, the 40th to be exact. May the bickering continue, may the House get all fired up again, and may we all be using another election thread in about 10-12 months time!

May didn't win in her own riding because of three reasons.

A) She was a loud-mouth for the length of the campaign and really seemed to get on a lot of people's nerves.
B) She never had anything to do with that riding before, but moved there for strategic reasons.
C) Peter McKay was the incumbent there and has a long family history in that area, and people generally like McKay.

I would say your third argument ensured her defeat more than the first two. The second one makes sense too though. That was a pretty lousy decision on her behalf and I felt that from the moment I learned of that move.

I'm not sure what you mean by that...

Anyways, that was a bizarre speech from Dion. No more talk about the environment, a 'smaller but more determined' group. He 'loves his country more than ever'. I know this is a guy who lost an election, but that smelled pretty bad.

Just the complete lack of knowledge of who these people are, what they stand for and the assumption that everything you are saying about them could be true or a lie and I would never know the difference - ya know the whole existential crisis of knowing and yet not Knowing that there is a world that exists beyond the Monroe doctrine.
