Best Film of 1951
« on: November 02, 2008, 06:12:44 AM »
Okay, while it looks Rashomon and Sunset Blvd, are the two films being put through to the knockout stages, its now time for votes for the best film of 1951. Again, the ten options are a mixture of critics and audience favourites. If the other option is used, please state the film, and it will be included in the final tally!!! Thanks.

(Voting for 1950's best movie is still ongoing till the 15th November, so if you haven't voted, put one in!!)

That's tough.  I am going to go with Streetcar.

At one point I would have said The Man in the White Suit, but that didn't hold up quite as well the last time I watched it.  Then there's the actual Oscar winner, An American in Paris, but that's not really my thing.  A Christmas Carol/Scrooge is pretty great, as are Ace in the Hole and Strangers on a Train.  I like Wyler's Detective Story a lot, too.  I had some problems with A Place in the Sun, but I bet I'd like it more now.  Forbidden Games was way disappointing.  Diary of a Country Priest is rather awesome.  I need to see Ozu's Early Summer, if I haven't already (all those seasonally titled films blend together for me), Renoir The River (I keep missing that one), De Sica's Miracle in Milan, Ophüls' Le Plaisir, Boulting's The Magic Box, Fuller's The Steel Helmet, and Powell/Pressburger's The Tales of Hoffman.  Oh, damn, there's a Mizoguchi film from 1951, too.  I feel like I somehow just missed out on this whole year.

Diary of a Country Priest (Other) gets my vote for now.  I might try to watch some of those others before the deadline, though.
