I think Cruz has a much better shot than Hall, she seems to be the one getting all the Oscar buzz at the moment. Cruz has the benefit of having multiple critically praised performances this year (Elegy being the other), a prior nomination (so we know the Academy likes her, and some people who thought she deserved an award for Volver will be pushing for her) and the showier role. Though Hall was my favorite part of the movie, her lack of notoriety and lack of her role's flashiness (plus maybe confusion over whether she's supporting or leading actress) probably dims her chances for a nomination.

Cruz will probably get the better buzz.  Sadly, I haven't seen the film, I'm only cheering on Rebecca Hall because I'm a fan of hers.

Interesting that Tilda Swinton has so so many votes. Considering she just won in this category, she'd have to be doing something radically different to get a repeat nomination. Or is their precedent for that?

Off the top of my head I can think of Tom Hanks winning twice in a row, but i'd put that in the 'doing something radically different' category, and Nicole Kidman winning for The Hours after being nominated for Moulin Rouge... I'm sure there's a lot of repeat nominations for those who miss out (i.e Penelope Cruz this year), but does it work the other way round as well?

As of Nov. 16th the Predicted Nominees are...
1. Amy Adams - Doubt   (75%)
2. Penelope Cruz - Vicky Christina Barcelona   (75%)
3. Rosemarie DeWitt - Rachel Getting Married   (50%)
4. Tilda Swinton - Benjamin Buttons   (50%)
5. Rebecca Hall - Vicky Christina Barcelona   (33.3%)
6. Marisa Tomei - The Wrestler   (33.3%)

Amy Adams buzz is starting to get overshadowed by Viola Davis, but this is still all very up in the air.

As of Dec. 6th the Predicted Nominees are...
1. TIE: Penelope Cruz - Vicky Christina Barcelona   (63.2% of the voters)
1. TIE: Rosemarie DeWitt - Rachel Getting Married   (63.2%)
3. TIE: Amy Adams - Doubt   (52.6%)
3. TIE: Tilda Swinton - Benjamin Buttons  (52.6%)
5. Marisa Tomei - The Wrestler   (36.8%)

And while I just added Kate Winslet for The Reader on my last update, she's already leaped into a tie for 6th.

Remember, you can change your votes any time you'd like.

As much as it pains me to do it, I'm switching my Rosemarie Dewitt vote to Kate Winslet. It's strange, supporting actress usually offers up the most surprises but this year it might be the most predictable acting category, at least for nominations.

I guess the idea is, if they need a 5th nominee they'll go "she's British and part of the 'Oscar family', we'll go with her.

Or she just has to be really good, which she is. Much better than she was last year, and much better than any other actor or actress this year.

Final Predictions?

I'll agree with Cruz, Winslet and Tomei.  But I think Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson is going to take the 4th and 5th spot.

You all have it a pretty close race with Tilda Swinton, Rosemarie Dewitt and Amy Adams more likely to get nominated.

"Really good" doesn't always correlate with "Oscar nomination" though. I really liked her in the film but I really haven't heard any awards buzz for her at all.

Much better than she was last year

Considering she wasn't great in Michael Clayton, that's not too hard. Though I don't know if she was much better in Button either. She was great in Burn After Reading though.

I went with Adams, Davis, Swinton, DeWitt, and Winslett.
