So you've seen every movie by each of them? Or is there a particular percentage you have to hit?

It's impressive, either way. Personally, I have a hard time sticking with one director. I just got the Cassavetes Five Films set, and yet am going to watch Breathless and start wading into Godard and the French New Wave.

Just based on what you have, the biggest blind spot of all my blind spots is Kurosawa. Plenty of his films are readily available everywhere, anytime, so there's really no excuse. This motivates me to make a list of blind spots to cover in 2020 and maybe get a little systematic with it.

Hmm it's been 8 years since I last updated my list. Might be a fun rainy day task. Just at first glance I see some major changes, like Cassavetes would be way higher now, and I would remove Woody Allen entirely.

The list comes from this Marathon of all 800+ Directors who have a thread in our sub-board. (Each director has a poll, so when you're looking for a cool project...) Each Director gets as much attention as I want to give them. Some are just a film or two and some are a thorough Marathon. In each thread I have a ranked list of what I've seen, as do many others, most using MartinTeller's color-code ranking system.

And this list went out of date almost immediately with Satyajit Ray (#103) and Ingmar Bergman (#104).

I've browsed through those the last couple months, and have voted in those for directors with whom I'm familiar, or just checked out ones like Carpenter and Cassavetes, with whom I'm now getting acquainted. You can really go down a rabbit hole there, and now I'm going to go look at thoughts on Godard.

Much as I like the color-coded rating system, I always end up discarding my own ratings. My perspectives on movies, music, even my own stupid diary entries, seem to change and morph with time. And yet, I always seem to find other people's ratings interesting.

I don’t know about Top 50 of All Time. It’s already a tough list to crack. The only sure bet I see at a quick glance is David Fincher.
