What are you playing?
« on: November 30, 2008, 04:44:42 PM »
So, we've pretty much created post-whoring threads for cinephiles, wanna-be-cooks, failed musicians, and other petty forms of information. Why not for gaming? Sure video games may seem stigmatic when compared to "higher forms" of entertainment; but then again, who can afford to see a Broadway play or a film every night in this economy? Nevertheless, there is much fun to be had in this diverse and growing hobby that is gaming...

Tonight, I'm settling down with a cup of coffee, a keyboard, a microphone and three friends from the far reaches of the internet globe to play Left 4 Dead.

The guys at Valve (the ones who brought you the Half Life series, Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress 2, etc) know how to make an entertaining game and this is no exception. Working as a team is key and I have a blast doing so. The zombies in this game are much akin to the likes of those found in Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later"... except some of these 'infected' have particular powers that can corner and kill any survivor. That's where the teamwork comes in. Conversely, the star of the show is the A.I. director, which rewards and punishes teams on the fly for using specific tactics and exploits. It keeps the game fresh and engaging... never static or repetitive.

I'm like 3h into Assassin's Creed. Pretty, but for some reason I'm just more interested in what happens in that lab than anything in virtual Jerusalem.

I played NHL 94 earlier today. Ah, good times.
-Le Chiffre: You changed your shirt, Mr Bond. I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

Damn, I guess I don't have the right version: no blood. I did give Gretzky a good spanking though!

There's no blood in '94. The Swingers gang is playing '93 and it was taken out of later versions. These kids today don't know what they're missing.

I kind understand that. I suppose seeing blood spew everywhere isn't at the top of everyone's list for great effects in a sports game. I can't say I would have minded a bit of blood the game. I love NHL 94 though. The skating is so slippery, the hitting makes players do flips, and you can crash the goalie to score goals.

I prefer real hockey to be played with skill and professionalism, but when it comes to the video games, I love a good old fashioned war zone.
