While I totally love Total Recall, few can deny what an awesome and slickly presented piece Goodfellas is (Even though I actually think Scorsese did one better with Casino but that's another thread).

I'm with you there.

But then you lost me.

Goodfellas is too slick. All of the characters seem like caricatures instead of people but nothing clever is done with this. At least Miller's Crossing is smart about the cliches it uses.

My personal fave from this year:

5. The Godfather Part III - I was lucky in that I didn't see any of the Godfather movies til much later in life than most people. I didn't get the chance to watch 'em until sometime during my early college years. And the first one I saw was the third installment. So I got to see it without the comparison of it's 2 predecessors.
And, IMO, on it's own, it's a very good mobster movie. Obviously, it can't compare to the first two, but in the genre of mob-flicks, it kicks it's own particuler brand of mafia ass.
Plus, with it's redemption-themed, politically-charged corporation/Vatican storyline,
it's a pretty goddamn smart movie, too.
Now while I know that I will always be in the minutest of the minority in regards to this film, I don't care, I still like it, b#tchez. And I still find watching the whole series as a trilogy to be quite a fulfilling movie-viewing experience.
Now, if only Sofia Coppola would've gotten shot at the beginning of the film instead of the end........

4. Misery - Whether she's starring in this movie or not, Cathy Bates always frightens me.

3. Die Hard 2: Die Harder - I always enjoy writing about this movie &/or it's predecessor because it always gives me the chance to use the phrase "Yippy-kay-yay, mother-f#cker".
And that's just always fun, innit...

2. Dances With Wolves - If you were to take all the things wrong with Waterworld & the Postman, irradiate them with the energies that compose & allow the Bizarro world to exist (i.e. "the opposite"), then you would get this movie.
Seriously.
I tried it once.

1.  Goodfellas - You just can't beat this gangster movie for charismatic energy. Scorcese pays close attention to the minute details that the mafia engage in for the sake of maintaining the lifestyle that they have become accustomed to. And then the director shows how that type of self-contained lifestyle can only eventually crumble as the outside world continually changes & evolves.
Plus, I really like how he uses the best part of "Layla" in this flick.

Hey guys, I have a great story for you! Ok. One guy is a small-time gangster. He wants to be in charge of everything and he pursues this goal with all of his energy. On the way he meets and makes friends with other typical gangsters. They yell and beat people up. They also start selling cocaine but then start to do it themselves! Once he reaches the top he can't stay on top and he quickly falls down to as low or lower than he was before. Also there are good musics and some slightly interesting camera stuff. And caricatures. Actually, you know what? Screw it. No real characters for this movie. Instead of having people we can relate to or people that make intelligent decisions let's just have them be "larger than life". That way they will be memorable! Awesome!

I think that movie exists.  It's called Miller's Crossing, and it's actually pretty good.  :P

I believe you are forgetting what happens in Miller's Crossing. There's no real rise and fall action. He always has a plan and he sticks to it. Plus it is actually funny and the use of music is a lot better (Danny Boy).
