But I'd be in favor of removing the chat filter altogether.

Just so we all know what we're talking about, I'll include below the exact text of the badword filter for chat (yes, they call it a badword filter).

Obviously, if you're offended by this, then look away now.

NSFW LANGUAGE BELOW

.++++++++++++++++++++++++

<?php
   $GLOBALS['fc_config']['badWordSubstitute'] = '#$%^&*';
   $GLOBALS['fc_config']['badWords'] = array(
      'asses' => 'arses',
      'asshole' => '@hole',
      'bitch' => 'b***h',
      'blowjob',
      'clit',
      'cock',
      'cum*',
      'FILMSPOTTER!',
      'damn',
      'dildo',
      'dink',
      'fuk',
      'jism',
      'jiz',
      'kock',
      'kum',
      '*mothaCINECAST!*',
      '*CINECAST!*',
      'nigger',
      'phuk',
      'phuq',
      'shit',
      'spunk',
      'twat',
      'дурак',
    );
?>

++++++++++++++++++++++++

You can see that the boards censor for f*ck has already worked on this list.

I'm certainly not trying to be gratuitous.  I just think that people probably imagine a worse case scenario then actually exists.  When I actually saw the list, it was much smaller than I had expected.

There is a way to exclude the filter completely or it can be modified on a word by word basis.

Of course, Adam and Matty should also be consulted before any change as well.

Surprised Lake Titicaca wasn't on the list.  :)

Lynch, could we please at the very least eliminate the word "damn" from the filter? I'm pretty sure it's not even considered swearing. Pretty sure it hasn't been since the late 50s.

Alex/Lynch - Thanks for the clarification on the language censors. I guess I've noticed it the most in Chat - to quote Clark Gable and have it come up as "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a ****" is pretty disarming. (Although unintentionally hilarious, as it sounds like you're saying something far worse than you actually are). I certainly respect the need for maintaining civility on the boards, but it seems like that kind of thing should be self-policing rather than enforced. 99% of any disagreements I've seen on here have been handled intelligently and respectfully - and users are quick to jump in and cool down a conversation if it starts flaming up (a la the Woody Allen thread).

I didn't take thevoid's use of "cocksucker" to be abusive - it seemed like it was utilized for comedic effect. But maybe that's just me. In any event, it's really the most annoying in Chat, so if there's a way to change it in there I'd be happy as a peach. Can't speak for Adam, but I remember Matty indicating he'd be in favor of this as well.

Wait, so "CINECAST!" is on the list of bad words?  But isn't that the word that replaces bad words?  Won't the forum go into a recursive loop trying to replace CINECAST! with CINECAST! and that CINECAST! with CINECAST! etc.?
