It's early yet, but so far I'm really happy with the way this year's categories shook out.

I believe Visioneers is eligible but virtue of not having seen theatrical release (no review in the New York Times) and not appearing on DVD until 2009.

I'll update the list of eligible films at some point.  I promise.

Alright guys.... preliminary ballot time, at least from me.  Shows the holes I have in my 2009 watching, but still.  Some of these are as of yet not FYC'ed... Awesome.  More people should fill out preliminary ballots!

I said somewhere that the New York Times would be the source of record in determining the eligibility for films released theatrically in the US.  The case of Stranded: I've Come from a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains makes me want to amend that statement because it's a film with a decent amount of support already that nobody (to my knowledge) had seen in time for last years Filmspots.

The problem is that, per the Times review, it opened in New York in October 2008.  That seems pretty definitive.

I thought the Los Angeles Times might provide a loophole (I misremembered their review having a 2009 dateline), but the film opened in LA in November 2008.

Hmm, I guess we're kinda screwed on this one. :(

I'm currently sitting at 5 2009 films watched, my plan is to watch 20 more the week before the ballots are due, yeah, that should work.

Wondering if Ballast, Dear Zachary, and that film that 1SO thought I was not good enough to review are Filmspot eligible.
No, no, and I'm not sure what you're talking about.

pixote
Didn't Ballast have a stupidly limited release? Isn't it basically premiering on DVD? We need new rules, dammit!

I believe that a few 2009 eligible films are now available on Netflix instant,

The Girlfriend Experience
Lymelife
Treeless Mountain

There may be more, but those are the three I can remember off hand.
