What Should I Read?
« on: February 11, 2009, 08:37:16 PM »
So I just picked up Watchmen and Persepolis from the library. I've never read a graphic novel before - which should I read first?

This won't be popular, but Persepolis. I didn't jump right into the Holy Grail of GNs and I think I was better off for it. The art of Watchmen is a bit... old looking. Persepolis has a much more modern style that helps me get into it more. Don't get me wrong here, Watchmen is great and the style works for it, I just wouldn't choose it for a first. And I definitely wouldn't recommend starting wit Sandman, though you should get to it eventually.

I would also start with Persepolis. It shows what the medium can accomplish without the super hero genre trappings.

The art is very iconic and stylized black and white - this fits well with the storyline.

Watchmen draws more from a super hero draftsman art style, which also fits the story's premise of showing superheroes in the "real world."

I would also then read Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud if you want to get passionate about the medium itself. Then Sandman. Then Kabuki. Then Fortune and Glory. Then From Hell. Then all five volumes of Tezuka's Adolph. Then Hicksville. Then La Perdida. Then The Ballad of Dr. Richardson.

This is what I was trying to say up there, but shorter and better.

What you wrote was great. I am the one driving her to become a collector.

I'll start with Persepolis. Thanks, guys.  :)

I have, actually, heard of McCloud's book - a student of mine referenced it in an essay a couple of quarters ago - it sounds pretty interesting, but I'll see how Persepolis goes.  ;)

McCloud's book is a media theory textbook in comic format. I love it.

Here's a recent interview McCloud did with The Sound of Young America.

It's my Spring Break and I am sick at home, I really need to read something deeply romantic and entertaining, I just got done with Rebecca and Anna Karenina, so something written more recently would be great, and ideas?

Try Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series.  Outlander is the first book.  It's not a romance novel, but it is a romantic novel.  It's not high-brow, but certainly holds its own in the romantic novel field.  I've read the series 3 times.  Loved it every time.

I hope you feel better soon.
