I need you guys to sell me on Murakami (=recommend one book). I've only read the short stories in after the quke, most of which I hated, so this better be good.

Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World was a great start for me. I wouldn't start with Wind Up Bird Chronicles because I have seen a lot of people start with that one and get turned off.

I'd probably start with Norwegian Wood or Sputnik Sweetheart.... both are melancholic and beautiful.

I really need to read something deeply romantic and entertaining

Have you already read Love in the Time of Cholera?

To the question at hand:

if you were raised on superhero comics, then Watchmen is great.  If you approach comics more from a cultural zeitgeist standpoint, I'd say go with Persepolis.  Or as an inbetween--go back and read "Ghost World" and then read Persepolis.

I need something for after The Road, hopefully something older, early 1900's or before and fairly short, about 250-300 pages, and fairly well known. Any suggestions?

Huck Finn? The Awakening? As I Lay Dying (might be a little too young)?

Short, old, CINECAST!ing hilarious.

Also, it has proper chapters.  :)

I've already tackled the first two and my local library does not have the third, though I was looking at some Faulkner earlier.

Sadly, my local library does not have this either and I'm nearly done the road so I don't have the couple days to wait until it arrives.

Read something by P.G. Wodehouse then. This one is a good start:
