Top 5 Performances by Former Wrestlers
« on: March 26, 2009, 03:28:33 PM »
This is inspired by a great IFC podcast where they talked about wrestlers who went on to become actors.  They listed the Top 5 Actors who came from wrestling, which was a fairly obvious list.  Then they talked about wrestlers who were only in 1 or 2 films but did really good work.

So, to start it off...my Top 5 Performances by former wrestlers...

5) Hulk Hogan in Rocky 3
4) The Rock in The Rundown
3) George "The Animal" Steele in Ed Wood
2) Andre the Giant in The Princess Bride
1) Roddy Piper in They Live

Gorgeous George in Alias the Champ

I scanned this as Curious George and thought "Oh, Matt, always making the jokes..."

I guess the joke is on me.

My #1 would have to be this guy:
Wanting for Thor what Thor wants for Thor.

There is only one person to put on this list.

"Inigo?"
"yah?"
"I hope we win."
I actually consider a lot of movies to be life-changing! I take them to my heart and they melt into my personality.

I haven't actually seen Alias the Champ, but when I was a kid I had a book I really liked called Whatever Happened to Gorgeous George, so I felt he deserved a mention.

He was huge in the 40s and 50s and he's kind of a forgotten American icon. James Brown and Muhammad Ali have both credited him as an influence regarding their own cocky images, of course I'd be careful not to overstate that influence.

Anyway, somebody should make a movie about him.

I'm just glad everyone is paying their proper respects to Mr. Piper.  Andre is a no-brainer.

Kevin Nash as the Russian in The Punisher amused me.  Also, Randy Savage in Spiderman.  And let's not forget Kane's star turn in "See No Evil".

Is Ventura's work in The Running Man really better than his skill in Predator?
