Didn't Williams study at Julliard before going into stand-up?

Are we going into a chicken/egg debate?

I understand where he studied, but he broke into the business as a stand up comedian.

I don't see how it could be a chicken/egg debate.  I just wonder if, by the time he was working in television, Williams had more professional training as an actor than professional experience as a standup.

Jamie Foxx, who started his career in stand up and on In Living Color, in Ray.  That's the only one I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned.

All of these are pretty recent examples.  Anyone care to toss out any dramatic performances by former vaudevilliens?  The only one I can think of would be Jackie Gleason in The Hustler.  Did Chaplin ever tackle any drama?

5. Steve Martin - Shopgirl

Angela Chase straddling the Jerk is just about the last thing I ever wanted to see. Yuck. But seriously, I thought Steve Martin was pretty bad in that movie.

I think Steve Carell probably has a great dramatic performance in him.

 Woody Allen in "Manhattan"
Alan Arkin "The Russians are Coming"
 Goldie Hawn "Sugarland Express"

I completely agree.  Same with Will Farrell.  Check out Winter Passing and Stranger Than Fiction.  I think of him in the same way as Bill Murray.
He can do his Will Farrell Anchorman/Talledega Nights schtick, however there is a real melancholoy in him and he knows how to use it.

I think Steve Carell probably has a great dramatic performance in him.

He definitely shows a great range and capability for emotion on The Office. I also liked him quite a bit in Little Miss Sunshine, even though I didn't like the movie as a whole.

Also, I don't think anybody has mentioned Dan Akroyd in Driving Miss Daisy. I thought he was pretty good in that.
