You need to watch the earlier films that build up to it, but 2046 is his magnum opus, combining and continuing the major themes from his prior films.  It's a typical (classic) WKW film inflated to epic proportions.

I don't know, maybe Chungking but I've watched In The Mood For Love a lot more. I always go back to it.
