Thanks for the links. That last article was an especially well-written argument. However, it solidified my problem with the film. The Grandmaster has been praised as a kung-fu film elevated to art by the director, but I was disappointed to see WKW pull up his same bag of tricks and use them on a story that would've benefitted from a different style. He did something different for the genre (both martial arts and biopic) but it was exactly the same notes of romantic longing and unspoken passion that he sings with every other film he's made. I had hoped 2046 with be the final summation. He's stuck in a rut.

And it's been fun reading all the American reviews that give him the benefit of the doubt and assume these time jumps are part of the shortened edit.

Was tempted to select didn't like any but I guess In The Mood For Love will work.

Isak Borg: I'll keep that in mind.

Chung Hing sam lam / Chungking Express
Ah fei zing zyun / Days of Being Wild
Yi dai zong shi / The Grandmaster
Faa yeung nin wa / In the Mood for Love

Thought of him as a director I didn't quite embrace just because of my understated reaction to In the Mood for Love, but it's starting to look like that was wrong. Will certainly watch more, 2046 being the obvious way to go next probably.
