If Nolan and Magnolia are OTT, you won't be seeing me arguing against it.

Except when I do.

I think I might like Inherent Vice more than The Master. I really dug that film. Would need to watch both again.

Re: Magnolia - I've nothing against rich white people crying. Wealth and ethnicity are not necessarily vaccines against pain or just making a proper ol' CINECAST! up of things. To quote Moe Szyslak "Rich people aren't happy. From the day they're born to the day they die they only think they're happy, but believe me - they ain't!"

But "it insists upon itself" can justifiably be said of any film with that musical interlude/montage scene. The montage is fine, the song is fine, but to have the characters actually sing along with the song is just too much.

It's more on-the-nose than glasses.

"What should have been an enjoyable 90 minutes of nubile, high-school flesh meeting a frenzy of blood-caked blades, becomes instead an exploitational and complex parable of the conflicting demands of agrarianism and artistry. I voted a miss."

I can't stand Phoenix in the James Gray films he worked in.  But in a PTA film, I am stunned at his effort.

Apologies for latching onto this, but I have an awful time understanding him most of the time. He grumbles the most in the Gray films, but I thought he was equally indecipherable here. Massive problem in The Master as well.

I rewatched The Master last night, and I heartened to hear that his imperceptibility is not just me and my aging.  I sure hope it’s not going to be a problem in there upcoming Lynne Ramsey film.
