90s US Round 5: The Thin Red Line vs. Lost Highway
« on: April 20, 2009, 05:18:28 PM »
I'm calling it now: Magnolia's got this in the bag.

Dear God I hope not.

Alright, rambling verdict discussion time.

Hopefully I won't be the only one of the Thin Red Line-Lost Highway group doing this, so I won't feel like a jackass.

To star things off, with the Thin Red Line... man, Malick really does have a tree fetish.  It's also the only John Cusack role where it didn't seem like he was playing the same CINECAST!ing character he has in every other film, although part of it might've been that he didn't have the screen time to become said character.  That's one of the things about the film, that I'm not sure about, one way or another.  It's SO expansive, it's incredibly long, but at the same time, there are several characters where you don't seem to know too much about them.  To me, the performance that I identified with the most was Koteas'.

Give the man his credit, he has an equally disturbing bird fetish.

Yeah, I have a feeling a rollicking group discussion won't be possible for these pair of films.  (i.e. I ended up looking like a jackass as feared).  I'll stop CINECAST!ing around and get a proper verdict up in the next couple of days.

I watched 45 minutes of TRL and fell asleep last night - i'll get back on the horse tomorrow.  John Cusack's in it?  I know that Woody Harrelson is in it because he has the bulk of the VO + 30 seconds of screen time.

No, no... keep going. Both these films demand questioning and introspection... so much better if it's done in public.

I watched The Thin Red Line only a month or so ago. While I got something out of it at the time, the impression has really faded. I would've recommended it, now I'm not so sure...

I'd still recommend it, just be sure to bring lots of Airheads and Ginger Ale.
