Really great break down pix, I think I agree with mostly everything that you typed. I think I didn't mind the Roth narration as much as you and I probably had a better time in Mr. Blonde's flash back, but everything else is spot on.

No one ever shoots Nice Guy Eddie.

Yeah, I've debated that with myself the last two viewings.  Mr. White shoots twice... and there's maybe a chance he angles his gun towards Eddie before the second shot.  That's what I told myself, anyway.

That's also what wikipedia told me. I was thrown off wondering how he went down and then I checked on there to see if it said anything and it said that White shot them both. I don't think it has a citation though.

Mr. White does shoot twice - unfortunately the second shot is not in Nice Guy Eddie's direction nor is it before NGE starts to fall backward.  The story is that a squib went off early and thus Penn reacted to it (surprised that he could feel that what with all the blow in his system) - and here's the part I just can never buy. QT noticed it and thought it would be cool to leave it in.  BS.  No one noticed it on this tiny indie flick untill after it was too late so QT concoted this story about how he thought it would create this forever unanswered question and be really cool.  It was just a mistake, admit it and move on.

Pretty much agree with all of that pix, but still think it's better than Trust.

My count is 3-3.

It would be helpful for forgetful people like me if reviewers put a big VERDICT = on the bottom of their verdict posts for tallying after subsequent verdict and non-verdict reviews and discussions come in.

My review system prevents this in the initial post as I copy and paste all of my reviews to Facebook as well, and in this case I even broke the scores to build tension, but I can make a follow up post doing this from now on.

For the record, I have Trust advancing.

Actually a second message posted later with the verdict is probably smart, so it doesn't give anyone an excuse to not read the review itself.

My count is 3-3.

So to this point we have:

Fly: Trustverdict
Smirnoff: Trust  verdict
Sdedalus: RD  verdict
_Keith_: RD  verdict
Junior: RD  verdict
Pixote: Trust  verdict

Is this correct so far?

I've got a cold, so I'm going to make this brief.

I wrote extensively about Reservoir Dogs earlier: it's great.

This is the first time I've seen Trust.  It's my third Hal Hartley film (also seen Henry Fool and Simple Men, liked the first, love the second).  Like those other films, it's stagey, fun quirky and actually rather forgettable.  I've seen Simple Men at least four times, and barely have any idea what its about, I just know I really like it.  Similarly, I saw Trust two weeks ago, and really don't remember much of that great dialogue.  I'm just left with the feeling that I had a good time watching it.  Maybe that's Hartley, maybe its something with my brain, I don't know.

As for problems with the film, I had a couple: the ending I think is really silly, actually, any scene with the grenade is pretty lame.  Shelly seems like she's playing a different character in the opening scenes than she is at any other time in the film.  Her character doesn't transform after meeting Donovan, she changes instantly into his ideal girl, which is weird.  Much of the mother's motivation doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and her scheme to trap Donovan in bed with Edie Falco so Shelly can see them is really dumb.  I like the way Shelly plays its resolution, but Falco's actions don't really make any sense ("hey there's a passed out guy in my bed!  guess I'll take my clothes off too!")

It's a really good movie.  I can't say I'm in love with it, as so many others in this bracket have seemed to have fallen. It's really hard to emotionally connect to something that's so intentionally artificial, stagey and written, and so it's to Hartley's credit that he's able to inspire that in so many viewers.  Similarly, despite the very writtenness of the film, its the emotions that linger for me as well (part of why I find his film's so hard to remember, perhaps).

Anyway, Trust is a very good film.  But it's not better than Unforgiven, Dead Man, Eyes Wide Shut or Reservoir Dogs.

If you want to count it, I was nodding my head while reading this.

Well if yours counts, so does mine, which leaves the stalemate in place.

Alright, I think we'll call this a 3-3 tie (sorry face, Thor) and turn the decision over to ferris.
