90s US Round 6: Magnolia vs. Ghost Dog (Deadline: May 31)
« on: May 11, 2009, 12:31:43 AM »
This matchup is open to anyone who can revisit the films and post a verdict by 11:59pm Hawaii time (GMT -9) on Sunday, May 31.

If these two films end up tied at that deadline, edgarchaput will then cast the tiebreaking verdict.

There's not a director's cut version of Ghost Dog, right?

Nope.

To get the discussion rolling, I have seen both films within the last month. This one is fairly one sided, Magnolia is almost a perfect film whereas Ghost Dog is a pretty good film. Both are quirky and have moments where they downright miss, the rapping kid in Magnolia being the best example of either film missing. I know I'm mainly dishing out generalities here, but for me it was as simple as that, Magnolia is better acted, has a better visual style, more interesting stories and characters, is just the better all around film. The one area where I prefer Ghost Dog is in the score, but I am biased towards RZA. In the end for me it comes down a film that I can watch time and time again and revel in the texture and depth versus a film that I can watch every once in a while and have a fun time with, but that's about it.

I case you haven't picked up on it yet, Magnolia wins pretty easily.

I imagine that either Goodfellas or Magnolia will likely win the bracket, so I may just wait until the next round to watch both of these films.

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to run round six, so it seems worth asking:

a) Who plans on partipating in this matchup?
b) Do you think you can meet the Sunday deadline?

I may well make this one. I might pick up Ghost Dog on Friday, and only watched Magnolia a few weeks back, so I'll see what I can do.

A) I think I already did
b) Don't think it will be a problem

Ghost Dog is fresh enough in my memory from watching it for the fourth round in March, but I don't really have time to revisit Magnolia, which I watched in February 2008. I think I could pronounce a winner, but I wouldn't be able to put forward many specific, coherent ideas. Hm, what to do?

Magnolia is mighty long.

I'll try and participate, but I have other films that need visiting as well. If I do participate I will certainly be able to meet the Sunday deadline.

I can't be bothered to revisit Magnolia, so I'll just standby and hope GD wins.
