Police track down owners of money in safes recovered from disaster areaMost of the money from safes found in tsunami wreckage and delivered to police has been returned to its owners, police say.According to the National Police Agency and other sources, as of July 10 around 5,700 safes had been found and delivered to police across the three prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima. A total of around 2.37 billion yen was inside, and about 2.27 billion yen, or 96 percent, of that money has already been returned to the original owners.Police stations that received the safes had them opened by professionals. Using account books, forms and personal seals found within as clues, police then searched for the owners. There were many cases where police had to contact municipal governments and evacuation shelters to track down where the owners had evacuated to, sources say.Counting money found outside of safes, such as money from discovered wallets and purses, police in the three prefectures had received a total of around 3.7 billion yen, with about 3.14 billion yen, or 85 percent, having been returned to the owners."There are clues to the owners for much of the money that has yet to be returned, and we will continue investigating," said a senior police official.
