I get on, I run, I get off. Exhausted despite having covered no actual ground. What am I?
Why, I'm a hamster on a wheel of course! Or in other words, I've just finished watching another David Lynch film.
Lost HighwayOn the technical side of things I agree with almost everything everyone has said about this movie. It ranges from mildly disturbing to massively unsettling, the performance of Robert Blake was one of a kind, the music was a perfect fit, and so on.
As for getting something out of this film, it was like going to the church of a god I don't believe exists. You know? You sit and listen, but by the end you don't feel any closer. Meanwhile everyone around you seems to have been deeply moved.
Now I know Lynch is into meditation. He finds it of great value, and has been doing it for years. Something about answers coming to him when he's in a meditative state, and such. And I think that's what he's trying to achieve with this film. Absorb the viewer so entirely, that answers will come not from on screen but from some external place, which is totally cool. It's just that my own experience with the film was far from absorbing.
I think me and Lynch just need to go our separate ways. Straight Story was fantastic, but it's the only film of his I'll ever bother to watch from here on out.
I'll see if I dislike Magnolia more than Lost Highway later this week maybe.
